We are all guilty of it.  You more than me if you work for a company.

In songs about work it is often referred to as working for the man.

I got an email from somebody in my network the other day.

It was a LinkedIn message.

Is your LinkedIn email connected to your work email?

My friend outlined how his work life during the last couple of years was a whirlwind building seven new websites, new store openings and a brand refresh.

Then they provided their mea culpa.  All of this was done at the expense of overlooking their own profile and career.

And then they shared their pain.

Unfortunately our HQ location is moving to another city.

My commute will now be four hours a day and I need a new job.

Careers change very quickly these days.

Any acquisition means people will get fired.

Any reorg will means people will get fired.

One thing that hasn’t changed from the past is that a stitch in time saves nine or dig your well before you are thirsty.

With age comes history.  I remember when the first year of the last recession happened.  Over 7,500,000 million people lost their jobs that year.  You see in a service economy the only way you can cut costs is by cutting people and fast.

And then you hire slow.

Today everyone is happy when the economy adds 100,00O to 200,000 jobs a month.

You do the math. Would take a lot of months to get to 7,500,000 million.  It is kind of scary.

Don’t worry recessions will never happen again right?

So how to you overcome career neglect?

When is the last time you went to a networking event?

When is the last time you sent out an invite on LinkedIn or accepted an invite?  Afraid of strangers?

When is the last time you changed your photo on LinkedIn.

Your last LinkedIn update was when?

Do you have your own business cards when you get out there?

If you trust the present you can end up repeating the past and hating the future.
